Gov. Bev Perdue Appoints McColl to Cape Fear Community
College Board of Trustees RALEIGH-- Gov. Bev Perdue has
appointed Louise F. McColl of Wilmington to the Cape Fear
Community College Board of Trustees. McColl is the president
and owner of McColl and Associates Inc.  She is a member of
BB&T Advisory Board, Sports Hall of Fame Board, Good Friends
Board, Wilmington Executive Club and American Executives of
North Carolina.  In 2008, she received the Established
Chamber Advocate for Outstanding Contributions to the
Chamber and Community. She is a graduate of New Hanover High
School. The Cape Fear Community College Board of Trustees
elects the president, employ personnel, purchase land
necessary for the operation of the college. The board
applies standards for admission and graduation, receives
gifts and donations, and provides for the administration of
all educational and occupational services. The board also
establishes public or private partnerships for the support
of the institution. ###

The Civitas Institute based out of Raleigh will hold its monthly poll luncheon here in the Port City on September 29th. Speakers include Frances DeLuca, Chris Hayes and The Big Talkers own Chad Adams. They will highlight the Civitas monthly poll on state issues including the latest results on the US Senate race. Poll results will also be released for the Seventh Congressional District race between Representative McIntyre and Ilario Pantano, as well as the latest from local State Senate races. The owner of an aerial fire truck that once belonged to the Port City Fire Department has donated it to the Fire Historical Society of Wilmington. The truck was placed in service in nineteen sixty three and remained in service until sometime in the late eighties. The truck will be moved today from its location on Carolina Beach Road to Marlboro Street where it will be stored by the Society.

Cape Fear Community College has recently earned an eight out of eight score on its annual report card from the state. According to the Critical Success Factors Report published by the Community College System, Cape Fear met all eight of the indicators. The school was among twenty four out of fifty eight community colleges in the state to meet all eight measures. The report measures factors that include everything from student satisfaction, to graduation and transfer rates.

Three area attractions have made the top twenty five list in the state as the most visited over the last year. The Wilmington Business Journal reports that nearly ninety five thousand students have taken a field trip to the Aquarium at Fort Fisher between September two thousand nine and May twenty ten. The places the Aquarium at number eighteen on the list. The Cape Fear Museum and Battleship North Carolina also made the list, ranking twenty third and twenty fourth. Almost seventeen thousand students paid a visit to the Museum last school year, while the Battleship welcomed more than thirteen thousand students.

The city of Wilmington received word late Tuesday afternoon that the latest potential developer for a convention center hotel is being stymied from making a deal because of the slow economy. After the city requested that the John Q. Hammons Hotels and Resorts company begin negotiations for a formal agreement on the hotel, the Hammons company responded with a letter citing economicconditions and prior financial commitments as reasons for not moving forward. The convention center is set to open in November. City Council members will look at ways to move forward over the next few weeks.

A new Rasmusen Reports poll is out and the survey shows Incumbent Republican Senator Richard Burr with a comfortable lead ahead of Democrat challenger Elaine Marshall in his bid for reelection here in the Tar Heel State. The poll of 500 likely voters in the state have given Senator Burr his best showing to date. Senator Burr has 54% of  the vote to Marshall's 38%.
